Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such drugs should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
