A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
