Social Media Influencers Driving Parallel Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

An underground economy for unlicensed weight-loss medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Acquiring Popularity Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers market the substance there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns

However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals administering products of uncertain source.

Some experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Service Response and Content Elimination

Based on the social media company, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.

Online Trading Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at residence.

Within minutes of entering one community, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Product Details and Costs

Inside these communities, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a injector should last, sellers give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Safety Actions

A representative for Telegram stated it actively moderated harmful material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Warnings

“People are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind this drug is sound, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to recent price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious health risks”.
