The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Because my travel mate was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I ought to seek a role with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his identity, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
